Uniting the cultures of Nigeria and Wales through pictures

Originally from Idofin, Nigeria, photographer Taiye Omokore now lives in Cardiff.

Since moving to Wales, he focuses on bridging his Nigerian background with his experiences in Wales through his work; in storytelling, fashion, and photography.

His first book, My Story in Red, is a very personal project that weaves the warmth and vibrancy of Nigerian culture with the landscape and spirit of Wales.

By using the colour red to represent love, courage, and transformation, the book looks at identity, nostalgia, and self-expression through symbolic elements like the gèlè (head covering) and the fìlà (cap).

My Story in Red celebrates the strength and beauty of Nigerian identity, and invites people to reflect on home, tradition, and belonging, says Taiye.

In 2023, Taiye was awarded Visual Artist of the Year at the Black History Wales Awards, and he is the editorial director of Klat magazine which promotes emerging artists and underrepresented voices in Wales and beyond.

Taiye’s latest commission, Dyfodol Du (Welsh for ‘Black Future’), will appear at the National Library of Wales.

Yn 2023, cafodd Taiye ei wobrwyo yn Artist Gweledol y Flwyddyn yng Ngwobrau Hanes Pobl Ddu Cymru, ac mae’n gyfarwyddwr golygyddol cylchgrawn Klat sydd yn hyrwyddo artistiaid newydd a lleisiau sy’n cael eu tangynrychioli yng Nghymru a thu hwnt.
