Jim Carrey to play Dr. Robotnik again in Sonic the Hedgehog 3

Fans of the blue hedgehog and the comedy legend are in for a treat, as Jim Carrey has confirmed that he will return as the evil Dr. Robotnik in “Sonic the Hedgehog 3.”

The third installment of the popular video game adaptation will hit the big screen on Dec. 20, 2024, from Paramount Pictures.

Carrey, who has been one of the most successful comic actors in movie history with hits like “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective,” “Dumb and Dumber,” “The Mask” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” has also shown his dramatic range in films like “The Truman Show,” “Man on the Moon” and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” He has won two Golden Globe Awards for his performances.

Carrey first played Dr. Robotnik, the mad scientist with the formidable facial hair and the arch-nemesis of Sonic, in the first “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie in 2020. He reprised his role in the sequel, “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” which was released in 2022 and improved upon its predecessor in many ways, according to critics and fans. The second film ended with a cliffhanger, as Dr. Robotnik’s body was not found after he fell from a giant robot, setting the stage for his dramatic return.

The third film will also feature the return of Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, the blue speedster whose exploits were featured in a number of Sega games. The movie’s logo, which was revealed recently, appears to be a nod to “Sonic Adventure 2,” a game that introduced Shadow the Hedgehog, who was teased in the post-credits scene of the second film. Shadow, who is a dark and edgy counterpart of Sonic, will likely play a major role in the plot of the third film.

Jeff Fowler, who directed the first two movies, will helm the third one as well. Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, Toru Nakahara and Hitoshi Okuno will produce the film. The “Sonic the Hedgehog” franchise has been a huge success for Paramount, as the combined global box office for the first two films stands at $870.8 million. The studio is also making a spin-off series, “Knuckles,” that will premiere on Disney+.

“Sonic the Hedgehog 3” is expected to be another fun and thrilling adventure for Sonic and his friends, as well as a showcase for Carrey’s comedic genius and villainous charm.
