Starfield tops Mortal Kombat 1 in US software sales

Two of September’s most anticipated games, NetherRealm’s Mortal Kombat 1 and Bethesda’s Starfield went head-to-head in September’s US software sales with one victor coming on top.

Starfield was also available on Xbox Game Pass since day one thanks to their partnership with Microsoft adding to the strong player base the game garnered in the past month.

Mortal Kombat 1 debuted in second place and became the eighth best-selling game in 2023 as seen in the chart below:

In third place came EA’s Sports FC 2024 (formerly known as FIFA) followed by Madden NFL 24 and Pay Day 3 which also dropped on Xbox Game Pass on day one this month.

According to Circana, EA Sports FC 2024 saw a double-digit percentage growth across both unit and dollar sales compared to its predecessor FIFA 23.

Starfield became Bethesda’s biggest launch ever with over 10 million players although it took longer to reach than Forza Horizon 5 which reached that number in only the first week of its launch.

According to VGC, Bethesda’s biggest game took twice as long to reach Forza Horizon 5’s milestone.

It’s worth noting that Forza Horizon had an advantage over Starfield since it also released on Xbox One adding to the already huge player base it had.

Both games garnered excellent reviews from gaming news outlets and journalists alike for their stunning graphics, gameplay, and story. Although they are vastly different games, we preferred playing Mortal Kombat 1 since the Bethesda formula stayed the same in Starfield.

In our opinion, both Mortal Kombat 1 and Starfield are excellent games that cater to different audiences with one aiming for the fighting community and the other for RPG, open-world players.
