Denzel Washington just got baptized and became a minister, was it a preparation for a movie role
When Denzel Washington recently became a minister and underwent baptism, was he preparing for a movie role?
On Saturday, December 21, the Kelly Temple Church of God in Christ, located in New York City’s Harlem district, baptized the 69-year-old Gladiator II star. He also received a minister license, paving the way for his future ordination.
Days before his significant 70th birthday, Denzel Washington, casually dressed in a gray T-shirt and black sweatpants, spoke to the congregation about embracing his faith during the ceremony, which was live-streamed on Facebook by the First Jurisdiction Church of God in Christ Eastern New York.
Archbishop Christopher Bryant added, “I turn 70 in one week,” according to Page Six. “I’m here, but it took a while.”
“There is nothing that [God] cannot accomplish for you if He can do this for me. The limit is absolutely the sky,” he continued.
Pauletta Washington, Denzel’s wife, was also present for the momentous occasion and spoke movingly about her husband’s spiritual development and how pleased she was to see him advance in his religion.
Pauletta remarked, “I’m still standing beside him forty-six years later, as only God will allow.” Thus, you have my utmost admiration. As the head of our household, you have set a wonderful example for our kids, who are now grown adults who understand the difference because we have taught them.
Denzel Washington also posed for pictures with his minister license and baptism certificate after the service, which saw Denzel being submerged in baptismal water.
Just over a month after the Oscar winner criticized religion in Hollywood and called it “unfashionable” in a Nov. 19 first-person piece for Esquire, Denzel announced his baptism.
In the essay, the actor talked about how, at the recommendation of actor and director Robert Townsend, he had his first, transformative visit to the Pentecostal West Angeles church in Los Angeles. “The biggest moment of my life” was how he described the moment when “I was filled with the Holy Spirit.”
Washington added that among his peers in the entertainment field, it is somewhat frowned upon to be open about one’s faith.
“I now understand the things I spoke about God as a young child, simply reciting them in church with everyone else. God exists. Love is God. The only path is through God. The real path is God. Blessings from God. In his essay, he stated, “It is my responsibility to exalt God, to give Him glory, and to ensure that everyone I interact with for the rest of my life knows that He is in charge of me.”
“When you see me, you see the best I can do with the resources my lord and Savior have given me. I’m not scared. He continued, “I don’t care what people think.” “You see, discussing the dread aspect is not a way to win an Oscar,” he continued. You can’t party and talk like that. That’s not acceptable in this town.
Even though Denzel is not yet ordained, he would not be the first famous person to do so. Numerous Hollywood celebrities, including Adele, Benedict Cumberbatch, Cardi B, Kathy Griffin, Whoopi Goldberg, Dwayne Johnson, and Tom Hanks, are preachers, according to the Universal Life Church directory.
