Thief returns what he stole 30 years ago with an apology letter in Iraq

In Kurdistan Region, Iraq, a thief returned a sum of money stolen nearly three decades ago, accompanied by an apology letter.

Residents of a Sulaymaniyah household were taken aback when a masked individual delivered a bag to their door on Saturday evening. Upon inspection,  Karim and his family discovered a sealed envelope containing 400,000 Iraqi dinars, alongside a Kurdish apology letter detailing the incident, as reported by local news site “Network 964”.

Karim disclosed that the remorseful thief sought forgiveness in the letter for pilfering 400 Swiss francs between 1990 and 1998.

In the letter, the repentant thief expressed, “I sought you out after your relocation… I took 400 Swiss francs from your Samood village home, thus returning these 400,000 dinars. I hope you absolve me of guilt, as I lacked any currency in my possession then, desperately needing it.”

The thief’s act of contrition garnered sympathy from locals after his letter circulated on social media.
