Indian school accepts empty bottles from students as fees

 Plastic waste is a global problem, and India is vastly affected by it. Only a small percentage of plastic waste is successfully recycled, leaving the rest to pollute the landfills and oceans, however, people have found creative ways to deal with this problem.

A school in the Indian state of Assam has managed to find a unique and innovative way to address the issue of plastic waste and illiteracy at the same time.

The Akshar Foundation, a school for underprivileged children, accepts plastic waste as its fee instead of money. Founded in 2016 by Parmita Sharma and Mazen Mukhtar, the school requires its students to bring 25 plastic bottles every week. The plastic waste is then recycled to make bricks, roads, and even toilets.

In addition to learning traditional subjects, the students are also taught languages, plastic recycling techniques, carpentry, gardening, and other practical skills.

The older students act as mentors to the younger ones and receive banknotes as salaries that they can use to buy snacks, clothes, toys, and shoes from local stores.

The motto of the Indian school is “learn more to earn,” and as the students make academic progress, their salaries increase. The school’s unique approach to education and sustainability has been well-received by the public.

An Indian politician, Temjin Imna Along, shared a video clip of the school, saying, “If this doesn’t surprise you, what will?” Many others have also praised the school’s founders for their innovative and inspiring initiative.

The Akshar Foundation is not only teaching students valuable life skills but also instilling the importance of environmental conservation.

By paying fees for plastic waste, the Indian school is helping to reduce the amount of plastic pollution in the environment and promoting sustainable living.
