The Blue Eye Samurai tells the story of a mixed-race woman who is also a master of the sword as she lives in disguise because people view her as a monster for her blue eyes. The show is set in the Edo period when almost all foreigners left the country after Japan closed its borders to the outside world.
While holding a grudge against her Western father, who is still residing in Japan, the blue samurai finds her way on the road of revenge as she fights her way through powerful and fearsome enemies and warriors!
Netflix’s Blue Eye Samurai is not an anime

As much as the directors of Blue Eye Samurai, Green, and Noizumi are fans of Japanese anime, the show takes a different approach in style with its 3D and 2D hybrid animation. Green clarified to Tudum by Netflix as follows:
“It’s a 2D/3D hybrid, utilizing technologies of both,” clarified Green. “But even when we use 3D, we wanted it to have a 2D handcrafted feel.”
3D animation with a 2D feel has been on the rise lately with movies such as the recent Spiderverse movies by Sony Animation and the new Puss n Boots movie by Dreamworks, which are both a must-watch for film enjoyers.
Fun Fact: Blue Eye Samurai came into existence after co-director, Noizumi who is half-Japanese gave birth to her child with blue eyes which sparked a conversation on how being white in the Edo Period was illegal.
We think that the Blue Eye Samurai is an amazing series that offers stunning visuals and a thrilling revenge storyline but keep in mind that the series is aimed at adults and has many scenes that would be inappropriate for children, including violence and sexual content.
Netflix actually published the first episode on their official YouTube channel for free so that people would try it out before subscribing to their streaming services.
