Barack Obama ’s daughter Malia drops “Obama” from her name in film debut

Barack Obama’s daughter drops her last name from her career.

Former US President Barack Obama talked openly about his daughter, Malia Obama, who has taken over social media and her choice to forgo her last name in her work.

In an attempt to distance herself from her family’s political past, the Obamas’ first daughter and budding filmmaker now goes by the name “Malia Ann” in her professional life.

According to PEOPLE magazine, during Malia’s debut film, “The Heart,” the teenage writer and director omitted the term “Obama” from her name and instead used the name “Malia Ann” in the credits.

“Ann” is both her middle name and the name of Barack’s late mother.

Barack Obama responded to the name change on “The Pivot Podcast” on Thursday, October 29, stating, “I told her, ‘You know they’re going to know who you are.'” And she said, “You know what?” He said, “I want them to watch the film for the first time without any affiliation, and I believe our girls are making every effort not to profit from it.”

During the interview, Barack indicated that his daughters, Malia and Sasha, were motivated to pursue their own professions rather than relying on their parents’ celebrity.

“The challenge that [Michelle and I] have is that they’re not allowed to help them at all; I mean, they’re very sensitive about these things; they’re very stubborn about them,” remarked the former head of state.

He further said that the attention Malia and Sasha have received since leaving the White House “is driving them crazy.”

Regarding how political journalists handled the Obamas during his presidency, Barack said that he “basically made a deal with the press corps.”

He went on: “I said, ‘You can follow me around; you can talk about me; you can do whatever you want, but leave my kids alone because they have the right to do it.” They did not choose to grow up; let them do so. Fortunately for the journalists, they left them alone.

Malia recently visited the 50th Deauville American Film Festival in France, where she presented “The Heart.”

Malia, who won the festival’s “Young Spirit” award, revealed that she was unfamiliar with the red carpet when she spoke at the ceremony.
