Japan slams new Assassin’s Creed Shadows trailer, ratioed with dislikes

Ubisoft’s upcoming game, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been under fire among Japanese gamers for several reasons including adding Yasuke (An African man who was an alleged samurai during the Sengoku period) as the main character instead of a Japanese character and it’s wrong depictions of Japanese culture.

A new Assasins’s Creed Shadows trailer in English and Japanese was published four days ago on Sep. 13, 2024, but ended up receiving a negative reception through comments and dislikes with Japanese users further judging the game for using a Chinese instrument called Xun in its trailer.

They further pointed out that the trailer’s background music sounded more “Chinese than Japanese” while a content creator called Shohei Kondo said that the Sakura trees in the game look “ugly”.

Kondo also claimed to have not seen a single positive comment from the Japanese audience with one saying, “Please don’t destroy Japanese culture further…”

Another added that the main characters are “playing a mysterious instrument (Xun) that 99% of Japanese people don’t know about.” Another replied, “It might’ve existed in Japan, but not in the era the game takes place in.”

In Jul. 2024, Japanese gamers signed a petition that garnered a whopping 30,000 signatures due to their dissatisfaction with Ubisoft’s upcoming title.

Other than Yasuke’s choice as a main character, Ubisoft depicted samurai as a higher class rather than warriors in service to nobles adding to the already controversial game.

Ubisoft has been on a roll lately when it comes to releasing mediocre titles such as the recently self-proclaimed “AAAA game” Skull and Bones which was a watered-down version of Assasin’s Creed: Black Flag’s ship gameplay and Star Wars: Outlaws due to its price tag, questionable gameplay, and disliked main character.
