A powerful tornado killed at least 25 people in the US state of Mississippi, and one person in Alabama, leaving dozens more injured. The town of Rolling Fork was virtually flattened.

The Duke of Sussex appeared unexpectedly at the High Court in London as legal proceedings began over alleged phone-tapping and other breaches of privacy. Prince Harry, who is one of those suing Associated Newspapers, publisher of the Daily Mail, was joined in the courtroom by Sir Elton John.

The African Union appealed for calm and called for dialogue in the wake of violent protests in Kenya. Opposition leader Raila Odinga called for demonstrations against the high cost of living and to demand what he calls electoral justice following last year’s election.

Police officers detained a supporter of India’s main opposition party, Congress, which is holding nationwide protests against the disqualification of their leader, Rahul Gandhi, from parliament after he was given a prison sentence for defamation.

At least 38 people died at a migrant processing centre in Mexico in a fire that officials said started during a protest against deportations. Mexican authorities said the dead and injured included people from Guatemala, Honduras, Venezuela, El Salvador, Colombia and Ecuador.

The UK and Germany should fill the next chapters of their relationship “with the restless pursuit of a better tomorrow”, King Charles said during his first state visit as king, with Camilla, the Queen Consort. They were welcomed at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife, Elke Büdenbender.

A meatball made using extinct woolly-mammoth DNA was revealed at the Nemo Science Museum in Amsterdam. In a world first, Australian company Vow Food has grown the meatball for a project looking at alternative ways to produce meat.

Humza Yousaf became the first Muslim to lead a major UK party after defeating rivals Kate Forbes (right) and Ash Regan (left) in the Scottish National Party leadership contest. He succeeded Nicola Sturgeon as SNP leader and Scotland’s first minister after a vote of party members.
