Samson studio goes bankrupt, employees left without salaries

The developer behind Samson, Liquid Swords went bankrupt following months of unpaid salaries, according to Breakit. The game received mixed reviews from users and journalists alike for its unpolished release, with early reports citing financial struggles.

Liquid Swords released Samson for PC on April 8 this year and for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on September 21. However, the game struggled to reach an audience despite its $24.99 price point. Samson was in development for six years before its 2026 release and leaned heavily into its Max Payne and GTA influences.

Breakit reported that the studio, by Just Cause creator and co-founder of Avalanche Studios Christofer Sundberg, failed to pay employees their salaries for months. It adds that those affected are set to receive state compensation.

The outlet wrote, “The struggling game development company Liquid Swords has not paid salaries for several months. Now bankruptcy has become a fact, which means that the state will intervene and pay compensation to almost 30 employees.”

As Liquid Swords files for bankruptcy, Sundberg hopes to find a new investor to acquire the studio.

The game received mixed reviews, including a 51/100 on Metacritic and 4/10 on IGN, citing bugs, clunky combat, and repetitive gameplay.

A Steam user wrote, “The is game has so many bugs and the combat is very very bad it’s shocking that this game released in 2026 this would make more sense if it’s 2010 maybe. I waited for few months to replay it again to give it a proper review and I thought that it would be fixed but nothing fixed. just not worth the time nor the money.”

Another added, “Simply unplayable with all the bugs. The developer went bankrupt too so that’s it for updates. Avoid.”
