Netflix’s Yu Yu Hakusho live action to premiere soon

Netflix Japan announced today, Oct. 12, 2023, that the Yu Yu Hakusho live-action is coming worldwide on December 14  with the addition of a special screening event a day before release.

Yu Yu Hakusho is based on the manga by Yoshihiro Togashi who is behind Hunter x Hunter. It inspired a 112-episode TV anime of the same name and aired from Oct. 10, 1992, to Dec. 17, 1994, on Fuji Television.

Sho Tsukikawa (Let Me Eat Your Pancreas) is directing the series with Tatsurō Mishima as a scriptwriter, Ryō Sakaguchi (The Lord of the Rings, X-Men) as VFX supervisor, and Takumi Kitamura as the main protagonist, Yusuke Urameshi.

Yu Yu Hakusho tells the story of a 14-year-old delinquent Yusuke Urameshi, who dies after saving a child from a car accident and is offered a second life by the spirit world to come back as a “spirit detective” and defeat evil demons.

Netflix signed a multi-year contract with Japan’s TOHO Studios to lease two of their studios in 2021 with Yu Yu Hakusho being the first live-action to be produced there.

We hope Netflix treats Togashi and Toei Animation’s work with the respect it deserves just like Oda’s One Piece live-action, as both the anime and manga are beloved by Shonen fans around the world!

The trailer didn’t show much except for the release date of the series:

This is not the first time Togashi’s Yu Yu Hakusho has inspired a live-action since the manga received a two-hour stage play in Japan Directed by Chûji Mikasano which ran from August to September 2019.
