Imagine a world without the internet: China unveils sea cable cutter

China has unveiled its new sea cable cutter machine. The cutter is a powerful, compact device capable of severing internet and communication lines, according to the South China Morning Post.
China’s new sea cable cutter
A recent report highlighted China’s latest invention: a sea cable cutter capable of operating at depths of up to 4,000 meters (13,123 feet). It is designed for both manned and unmanned submarines.
Notably, sea cables have long been used by multiple countries and governments, especially amid escalations and conflicts. The new Chinese device was developed by the China Ship Scientific Research Center and the State Key Laboratory of Deep-Sea Manned Vehicles.
China’s new tool is designed to target armored cables made of steel, rubber, and polymer, which are used to transmit data underwater and operate at great depths.
Countries worried about China’s new tool
As China developed this tool for civil and sea mining purposes, other countries around the world have raised concerns about its potential to disrupt internet and communication services globally.
