Eurovision tries to erase Swedish-Palestinian singer identity

Eurovision is under fire yet again among pro-Palestine activists and users alike after the European Broadcasting Union accused Sweden’s 2024 contestant of bringing politics to the event for wearing a Palestinian keffiyeh on his arm and hand.

The individual in question is Eric Saade who performed a song on behalf of Sweden for the Eurovision 2024 singing competition. Additionally, he stated that the Palestinian keffiyeh was given to him by his father who is from Palestine, and called out the union for racism.

According to The National News, a European Broadcasting Union spokesperson said, We regret that Eric Saade chose to compromise the non-political nature of the event.”

Eric later made a statement on his official Instagram where he said, “I just wanted to be inclusive and wear something authentic to me – but the EBU seems to think my ethnicity is controversial. It says nothing about me, but everything about them.”

Eurovision allowed Israel to participate but not Russia

Eurovision

Recently, Eurovision made headlines after users across social media called the contest a “bunch of hypocrites” for allowing Israel to participate but not Russia despite the ongoing Israeli aggression on Gaza that resulted in the killing of more than 34,844 Palestinians and the injuring of at least 78,404.

Users across social media had a lot to say about the matter:

“Ban of Russia, but at the same time no bann for Israel, of course, its non-political nature of contest.”

“Imagine trying to erase someone’s identity!”

“Compromise??? It’s his origins and he’s proud of it. Everyone is crying hard for Israel but he didn’t say or do anything against it.”

“Ah yes, Israel can compete and raise its flag in Eurovision but when a Palestinian shows their culture it’s insensitive and political.
