Dakota Johnson opens up about Chris Martin’s support during her struggles
Dakota Johnson recently offered a glimpse into her personal relationship with Coldplay singer Chris Martin, shedding light on a moment when he played a pivotal role in lifting her spirits during a bout of depression.
The Fifty Shades of Grey actress, known for her discretion about her private life, shared the heartwarming incident at the 2023 Hope for Depression Research Foundation luncheon. She recounted, “A few weeks ago, I was having a low day. And my partner said to me, ‘Are you really struggling?’ and I said ‘No?'”
Her partner, Chris Martin, demonstrated a keen observation, noting, “Baby, you are wearing a Cats T-shirt.” The reference to the musical Cats unveiled the truth, and Dakota revealed, “So it turns out, I really was struggling. But that moment lifted me up and pulled me out of it.”
Dakota, who has grappled with depression since her teenage years, expressed her decision to speak more openly about her experiences. She shared at the event, “If me saying one little hopeful thing or one maybe relatable thing can help one other person feel a little bit better or a little bit less alone with their experience, then I am a very willing advocate.”
While acknowledging that she often employs self-deprecating humor to discuss depression, she admitted, “Covering my pain or anxiety with comedy has become a lifelong tool, and I don’t think it’s a bad thing, it works, it helps me. Because, sometimes if I don’t laugh, I will cry.”
Throughout her journey, Chris Martin has been a constant pillar of support. The couple, who started dating in 2017, has shared numerous romantic moments, from beach outings in Malibu to binge-watching Squid Game together. Dakota emphasized her gratitude, stating, “But Chris—who she began dating in 2017—has been by her side through it all, giving her a taste of paradise by serenading her at concerts, hitting the beach in Malibu or even binge watching Squid Game together over the last six years.”
Their relationship, often under the speculation spotlight, has withstood the test of time. Matching tattoos, joint appearances at events, and mutual support at career milestones have all contributed to the perception of their fairytale romance.
As the actress-turned-director took charge of Coldplay’s “Cry, Cry, Cry” music video, the couple’s real-life connection mirrored the on-screen narrative of navigating life’s challenges together. Their shared residence in a modern Cape Cod-styled home in Malibu and vacations to exotic locations further solidify their bond.
Chris Martin’s public acknowledgment of Dakota during performances, such as pointing to her in the balcony before playing Coldplay’s collaboration with BTS, “My Universe,” showcases the depth of their connection.
