Meghan Markle’s father Thomas Markle arrested over child sexual abuse material

Meghan Markle’s father Thomas Markle faces a federal charge following his arrest in Florida.
Thomas Markle, the estranged father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, is due to appear in a Florida court after being arrested by the FBI on a federal charge involving the alleged possession of child sexual abuse material.
The 82-year-old was taken into custody on Friday, November 6, in Lakeland, Florida, near Tampa. According to the US Department of Justice, he faces one count of possession of child pornography under a federal criminal complaint. His initial court appearance is scheduled to take place at the US District Court in Tampa.
The case has drawn widespread attention because of Markle’s connection to the Duchess of Sussex, but the allegations themselves are extremely serious. Prosecutors claim that sexually explicit material involving minors was kept in two storage units in the Los Angeles area that Markle had rented for nearly two decades.
FBI Seizes 78 Items From Thomas Markle’s Storage Units

According to the Department of Justice, FBI agents searched two storage units registered to Markle under court-authorized warrants. He had reportedly rented both facilities since 2008, with his most recent payments made the previous month.
Investigators seized approximately 78 items, including slides, film negatives and books that allegedly contained suspected child sexual abuse material.
The criminal complaint describes three images in particular. According to the affidavit, two allegedly showed an adult man, identified by a witness as Markle, with a nude prepubescent girl. A third allegedly showed a nude prepubescent girl in a room that appeared to be part of a motel chain in the Philippines.
The FBI investigation began after authorities received information in October about suspected material among Markle’s possessions in the Philippines. Investigators also received information about the storage units in California, which eventually led to the searches.
First Assistant US Attorney Bill Essayli said the allegations were extremely serious and that prosecutors intended to pursue the case under federal law. FBI Director Kash Patel also confirmed the arrest, saying agents had worked with other law enforcement partners to locate the material.
If convicted, Markle faces a maximum statutory sentence of 20 years in federal prison. However, the charge remains an allegation, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Meghan Markle’s Half-Brother Reportedly Helped Trigger Investigation
The arrest follows reports that Thomas Markle Jr., Meghan’s half-brother, discovered a collection of suspected child sexual abuse images at their father’s former home in Cebu City, Philippines.
According to reports, Markle Jr. handed over electronic devices and hard drives to Philippine authorities and contacted the FBI. The discovery reportedly prompted investigators to examine material connected to his father, including the two storage units in California.
Philippine police had also received a court warrant to examine digital material as part of their investigation.
Markle had previously denied the accusations, describing the claims as lies. His arrest in Florida now brings the investigation into a federal criminal case in the United States.
Meghan Markle Says She Is Deeply Distressed

The allegations have also brought renewed attention to the long-running estrangement between Meghan and her father.
Meghan recently said she was “deeply distressed” by reports that suspected child sexual abuse images had been found at her father’s former home. She also revealed that a letter containing what she described as “troubling allegations” about him had been sent to London’s Metropolitan Police in 2018.
In her statement, Meghan explained that she had been assured the allegations were being investigated. She also addressed years of media speculation about her relationship with her father, saying her decision to keep him away from her children was made to protect them.
Thomas Markle did not attend Meghan’s 2018 wedding to Prince Harry at Windsor Castle. Their relationship became increasingly distant in the years that followed, with the two rarely communicating publicly.
The Sussexes declined to comment on the latest arrest when approached by Sky News.
Markle, a retired television lighting and photography director, had been living in the Philippines before returning to the United States following serious health problems, including strokes and the amputation of his left leg.
His initial appearance in Tampa is expected to be the first major step in the federal proceedings. Further details about the case, including any response from his legal representation, are expected to emerge as the investigation and court process continue.
