14 people hospitalized during The Chainsmokers concert in San Jose

The Chainsmokers concert ended with 14 people hospitalized.

What was supposed to be a night of music and dancing turned into a major medical response Friday night after 14 people were taken to hospitals during The Chainsmokers’ concert in San Jose, California.

The electronic duo, made up of Alex Pall and Drew Taggart, was performing at Discovery Meadow on September 4 when emergency crews began receiving multiple calls about people needing medical attention.

According to the San Jose Fire Department, the first emergency response came at around 8:22 p.m., when firefighters were called to the outdoor concert after reports of multiple patients requiring assistance.

The fire department requested an Ambulance Task Force, two additional advanced life support fire units and a battalion chief to help manage the response. In total, 14 ambulances were sent to the scene, and 14 patients were transported to local hospitals.

The San Jose Police Department also responded, with officers helping manage traffic around the venue as emergency crews treated concertgoers.

Suspected Alcohol and Drug-Related Issues

Officials have not said that all 14 hospitalizations had the same cause.

However, San Jose police told NBC Bay Area that several people were being treated for suspected alcohol intoxication and drug-related issues. Some concertgoers were treated at the venue before others were transported to hospitals.

At least 10 people were reportedly taken to the hospital during the final 30 minutes of the concert, according to ABC7. The fire department later confirmed that 14 people in total had been transported.

Authorities have not released the medical conditions of those hospitalized. It is also unclear whether the individual cases were connected or whether they resulted from separate incidents occurring around the same time.

There have been no reports of arrests connected to the medical emergencies.

The Concert Continued

Despite the large emergency response, the concert itself was not stopped.

The Chainsmokers continued their performance as emergency personnel dealt with the medical calls around the venue. The duo has not publicly commented on the hospitalizations.

They did, however, continue sharing footage from their performances on social media.

The group also went ahead with its next scheduled performance the following day, September 5, at Encore Beach Club in Las Vegas.

The incident comes during a busy period for The Chainsmokers, who have continued touring and performing at major events throughout the summer.

Emergency Response Wrapped Up

The large-scale response eventually came to an end later that night.

ABC7 reported that the concert began at around 5 p.m., while the San Jose Fire Department said the incident had wrapped up by approximately 10:34 p.m., with its resources returning to service.

For now, authorities have not provided further details about the people who were hospitalized or their conditions.

The investigation and official reports have also not established a single cause for the medical emergencies. While police cited suspected alcohol intoxication and drug-related issues among the concerns, those descriptions do not mean every hospitalization was confirmed to be caused by alcohol or drugs.

The Chainsmokers have yet to issue a public statement about what happened at their San Jose show.

For concertgoers, however, a night that began with music and celebration ended with a significant emergency response involving firefighters, paramedics, police officers and 14 ambulances.
