Mert Ramazan Demir and Lizge Cömert become Susuz Yaz leads

Lizge Cömert and Mert Ramazan Demir lead the highly anticipated Susuz Yaz.

Lizge Cömert has officially been chosen to play Bahar in Susuz Yaz, the upcoming series adaptation of Necati Cumalı’s famous work. She will star opposite Mert Ramazan Demir, who will play Osman in the new television version.

The role of Bahar has attracted particular attention because of its connection to the iconic 1963 film adaptation of Susuz Yaz. In the original movie, directed by Metin Erksan, Bahar was portrayed by Hülya Koçyiğit.

For the new series, Ay Yapım reportedly held meetings and auditions with numerous established and younger actresses before settling on Cömert for the role. The decision makes her one of the central faces of the highly anticipated project.

Lizge Cömert Joins Mert Ramazan Demir

Cömert will share the lead with Mert Ramazan Demir, whose casting was announced earlier this month.

Demir, best known for his role as Ferit in Yalı Çapkını, will portray Osman, a character whose story sits at the center of the new adaptation. Turkish reports note that the names of the brothers have been changed from those in Cumalı’s original work, with Demir’s character now called Osman.

The series will explore the relationship between Osman, his brother Hasan and Bahar while building around themes of water, land ownership, family conflict, ambition and betrayal.

Unlike the original film, the television adaptation is being developed with additional storylines and characters to create a longer-running drama. Writer Sema Ergenekon has reportedly expanded the original story with new dramatic layers rather than simply transferring the movie’s plot directly to television.

A 1970s Period Drama

Susuz Yaz is being prepared as a period drama set in the 1970s.

The project is being produced by Ay Yapım, with Sema Ergenekon writing the screenplay and Yusuf Pirhasan directing. Filming is planned in Adana, with preparations currently continuing ahead of production.

The series has attracted attention partly because of the reputation of the original story. Cumalı’s Susuz Yaz was first adapted for cinema in 1963, and Metin Erksan’s film went on to win the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival, becoming a landmark in Turkish cinema.

More Names Join the Cast

The cast has continued to grow in recent weeks.

Award-winning actress Serpil Gül has joined the series as Beyaz, the mother of Hasan and Osman. More recently, Meriç Rakalar was announced as part of the cast, taking on the role of Müslüm, described as Osman’s close friend.

Müslüm is portrayed as an honest young man who works alongside the local veterinarian and agricultural engineers. According to the character details reported by Turkish media, Osman helped him learn to read and write, creating another important connection within the story.

Casting is not yet completely finished, with Turkish reports indicating that discussions are continuing for several remaining roles, including Hasan.

A New Chapter for a Classic Story

The new Susuz Yaz will therefore carry the name of one of Turkish cinema’s most celebrated works while giving the story a much broader television treatment.

With Lizge Cömert taking on the role once played by Hülya Koçyiğit and Mert Ramazan Demir leading the new version as Osman, the pairing is already attracting considerable interest ahead of filming.

The series is being prepared for Kanal D, with filming planned in Adana. A premiere date has not yet been announced.

As production moves forward and the remaining cast is finalized, more details about this new interpretation of Susuz Yaz are expected to emerge.
