Windscribe VPN sparks outrage over AI Hitler ad

 Popular VPN provider Windscribe sparked outrage on social media after posting a questionable ad on X (formerly Twitter) featuring an AI-generated video of Adolf Hitler. 

The official account wrote, featuring the video in question, “Bossman told me to “go nuts” with the RTX 6000 GPU and MiniMax H3. I hope they don’t get upset at this new Windscribe ad I made…”

It featured an AI Hitler who is mad that Netflix won’t stream his favorite series because of the platform’s region locking. Hitler then added that the series is only available in Poland and told a Nazi officer to order soldiers to invade Poland.

The video ended with “You don’t need to invade Poland to watch their shows. Windscribe gives you a one-click solution.”

While the account’s admin thought of the ad as an acceptable take on edgy humor, several Windscribe subscribers weren’t too keen on the company’s new marketing strategy, causing a flood of subscription cancellations:

An X user responded under the video, “Honestly the AI ad is making me reconsider my subscription for the first time. I don’t think mullvad does this sh*t.”

“Who’s been running your social media? it’s becoming worse and worse these past couple of months. This looks so bad for you.”

“I’m gonna be so real, I’ve defended you guys as a good VPN company across several accounts for a long while but this tweet and your actions since it I can’t defend anymore. Someone get ahold of the CEO and correct course.”

Windscribe’s CEO Yegor Sak told TechRadar that the intention of the ad was “to mock authoritarianism and censorship in an absurd way.”

Sak added, “Users choose us because we are independent, blunt, privacy-focused, and willing to say things most companies will not. That approach will not land perfectly every time, but the alternative is becoming another corporate VPN with safe posts, vague values, and nothing real to say. That is not us.”
