Saudi Arabia condemns Iranian attack on UAE tanker

Saudi Arabia on Saturday condemned an Iranian attack on a tanker belonging to the United Arab Emirates’ energy giant ADNOC in the Strait of Hormuz.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s condemnation and rejection in the strongest terms of the targeting of an Emirati tanker during its crossing of the Strait of Hormuz,” a statement read, stressing that these attacks constitute “an attack on maritime navigation security and safety and global energy supply security.”

It further said that Iran’s continuation of these attacks is considered “a gross violation of international laws and norms, including Security Council Resolution 2817, that provides freedom of shipping and safe passage in sea lanes.”

“The Kingdom holds Iran responsible for its continuation of these brutal attacks,” the statement said, demanding an immediate cessation of these “transgressions” to preserve regional stability and peace.

It reiterated Saudi Arabia’s solidarity with the “brotherly UAE” and the measures it takes “to maintain its sovereignty and capabilities.”

Earlier that day, ADNOC reported that one of its vessels was targeted by a missile while transiting the strait, adding that no injuries were reported and the situation had been brought under control.

Since the beginning of the Iran war, Tehran has regularly targeted neighboring countries and commercial ships in the strait with severe consequences for the world economy.
