Perry the Donkey dies, Donkey’s model in ‘Shrek’

 Perry the Donkey who inspired one of the most beloved characters in DreamWorks Animation, ‘Donkey’ in Shrek has passed away at 30 after battling hoof disease, according to his caretaker Jenny Kiratli. 

Perry who resided in Bol Park for three decades was euthanized last Thursday, resulting in a swarm of heartfelt comments from fans offering condolences to his loved ones amid his contribution to the popular animation franchise. Here’s what some had to say about Perry’s passing:

“2025 is NOT off to a good start.”

“Rest in Peace, our beloved Perry.”

“RIP Perry. Your sweet face brought us all a lot of joy.”

According to Palo Alto, Bol Park’s staff confirmed that Perry was also suffering from a disorder in his left leg causing him immense pain and difficulty in standing, besides laminitis, the hoof disease mentioned above.

The staff also tried easing Perry’s pain through a series of methods including acupuncture, light, and massage therapy but his condition wasn’t improving. Kiratli added that Perry was in constant company before his passing.

Moreover, he was kept at the range so that his companions, April and Buddy could understand that he was no longer with them.

Barron Park Donkeys took to its official Instagram account and wrote, “We are heartbroken to share that our beloved Barron Park donkey, Perry, passed away yesterday at the age of 30.”

The statement added, “He was a beloved member of our community and we know many people will be touched by his passing. Memorial plans will be announced soon.”

Perry helped bring one of the most beloved characters in animation history to life and his spirit will live on as Shrek makes a comeback in its long-anticipated fifth sequel.
