America’s Conditions for UN Reform: A Disaster for International Law

“The killing and persecution of innocent people worldwide have reached alarming levels, with no mechanism in place to hold accountable those responsible for these atrocities. The United Nations has, unfortunately, become complicit in these violations, maintaining its ineffective approach to addressing critical issues.

The United States wields significant influence over the decisions of the United Nations Security Council, enabling it to push through and endorse any transgression or violation it desires globally. While professing a commitment to international legitimacy, the U.S. frequently exercises its veto power to block resolutions that do not align with its interests or those of its allies, even when they involve crimes committed by said allies.

Washington bears significant responsibility for shielding Israel from accountability, leveraging its veto power and issuing threats to humanitarian organizations to withdraw financial support if they dare to condemn Israel or seek to impose consequences for its actions.

Despite its persistent condemnation of others, the United States deflects blame for the crimes it supports onto the United Nations, actively obstructing any reforms within the organization that might challenge its dominance and control.

It’s no secret that the United States and Western nations are among the primary enablers of Israeli atrocities in Gaza, resulting in the deaths and injuries of over 120,000 Palestinians in recent months. This is due in part to the U.S.’s obstruction of ceasefire agreements and unwavering support for the occupying army.

The proposals and reform efforts put forward by the United States and its Western allies are demeaning to nations worldwide, particularly those in the third world and developing regions. Washington advocates for a system that preserves its monopoly on global decision-making, compelling other nations to participate in legitimizing crimes and violence.

Under Washington’s proposed reform framework, membership in the United Nations is tied to financial contributions, participation in peacekeeping efforts, and development initiatives. This presents a significant hurdle for many third world countries, which have long suffered under American hegemony and dominance.

However, the United States’ rhetoric about reform rings hollow when it actively opposes the implementation of international laws and regulations. Under the guise of Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s ‘rules-based order,’ the U.S. prioritizes its own interests over international norms and undermines the authority of the United Nations.

It is imperative that any reform process be fair and inclusive, granting veto power to all member states and ensuring the uniform enforcement of international laws and UN resolutions.”
