UAE groups clean trash left by campers in mountains
Despite warnings and fines for littering in picnic spots across the UAE, irresponsible campers continue to ignore this rule, leaving behind a trail of rubbish. In response, dedicated groups have emerged, coming together to clean up these areas and raise awareness about the consequences of littering.
One such group, Healing Al Hajar, features volunteer Mariam Asghar Khan. This group explores and embarks on treks through the Wadis of the UAE, actively engaging in cleanup initiatives.
Places like Wadi Al Shees and Umm Al Quwain Beach have benefited from their efforts. Mariam’s motivation stems from witnessing the tragic fate of a turtle that consumed plastic, prompting her to realize the impact of individual actions. “I saw a turtle die because it ate too much plastic, which saddened me a lot. I started thinking that just one action from me could take a life,” she shared.
Favaas Badminton, an avid climber, leads groups dedicated to both mountain climbing and environmental cleaning. They organize trips specifically focused on cleaning the environment and setting an example by carrying plastic bags for trash during their adventures.
Their efforts have successfully cleaned several mountains in Hatta and Shawkah, inspiring positive change in others.
Locals have called for action as well, showing the beautiful Wadi Shawkah as a valley frequented during the UAE’s peak winter season. Warning signs urge responsible behavior, but some people still ignore the impact their actions have on the environment.
Musabbeh Saif, a resident of Shawkah, expresses his dismay at the garbage left behind, questioning how future generations can enjoy the area. He appeals to those responsible, asking them to consider the consequences of their actions.
As the UAE’s landscapes bloom during the winter season, it becomes even more important to make sure to preserve their beauty. It’s always good to know that efforts to combat littering are underway, aiming to ensure that future visitors can appreciate and cherish the wonders of nature.
