2018 video of Taylor Swift urging fans to vote goes viral – Is it AI?

Taylor Swift, the billionaire pop artist, is encouraging her followers to cast their votes on election day in a video that is going viral.

In an Instagram post earlier this week, the artist urged fans to cast their votes, despite the video’s original recording from 2018. It has received millions of views on social media.

Swift encourages her young admirers to vote in the video, which she recorded while speaking into the front camera of her phone and then manipulated with an Instagram effect.

A number of X users shared the video on social media on Tuesday, and it received millions of views and thousands of likes.

In 2018, Swift recorded and uploaded the video to her Instagram story, openly supporting Democrat Phil Bredesen against Sen. Marsha Blackburn in the Tennessee U.S. Senate race, which Blackburn ultimately won.

Since several reposts of the video on X had that user’s TikTok watermark, the revived video seems to have come from the @taylor_swift_videos account, which uploaded it this morning and received over 350,000 views.

Bill Madden, a singer-songwriter with over 270,000 followers, reposted the video on X, garnering 1.6 million views.

Call to Action, an X account supporting Vice President Kamala Harris with over 1.1 million followers, also published the video. It has received over 500,000 views.

Although not in that widely shared video, Swift did encourage her supporters to cast their ballots this week. In an Instagram post on Monday, she commemorated the conclusion of her Eras Tour’s U.S. leg by providing a “friendly but extremely important reminder that tomorrow is the US Election and your last chance to vote.”

Shortly after her debate with former President Donald Trump on September 10, Swift said on Instagram that Harris is a “steady-handed, gifted leader.” This was Swift’s much-awaited support of Harris. Swift said she wanted to fight disinformation and mentioned an AI-generated picture Trump shared on Truth Social that erroneously suggested she had backed him.
