World reacts to Joseph Aoun’s appointment as Lebanon’s new president
Lebanon’s parliament elected army chief Joseph Aoun head of state on Thursday.
The presidency, reserved for a Maronite Christian in Lebanon’s sectarian power-sharing system, has been vacant since Michel Aoun’s term ended in October 2022, with deeply divided factions unable to agree on a candidate able to win enough votes in the 128-seat parliament.
Here’s how leaders across the world reacted to Aoun’s election.

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman congratulated Joseph Aoun on his election as Lebanon’s president, Saudi Press Agency reported.

France
French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the “crucial election” by Lebanese lawmakers of army chief Joseph Aoun as president after a two-year vacuum at the top, calling his victory an opportunity for reform in the country.

“Congratulations to President Joseph Aoun on this crucial election,” Macron wrote on X.
“It paves the way for reform and the restoration of Lebanon’s sovereignty and prosperity,” he added.
