US applauds Saudi Arabia for hosting Sudan ceasefire talks
The United States has expressed its gratitude to Saudi Arabia for hosting talks between representatives of Sudan’s Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary in Jeddah in a bid to facilitate peace and humanitarian relief in Sudan, the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) announced.
US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller issued a statement commending the Kingdom’s role as the host and welcomed the participation of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) on behalf of the African Union as a co-facilitator, SPA added.
According to SPA, the ceasefire talks, reconvened with the cooperation of the United States, Saudi Arabia and IGAD, aimed to address several critical objectives included facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid, establishing ceasefires, implementing confidence-building measures, and working towards achieving a permanent cessation of hostilities in Sudan.
These discussions align with the Jeddah Declaration of Commitment to Protect the Civilians of Sudan, which was initially signed on May 11, the news agency reported.
Miller emphasized the need for constructive engagement from all conflicting parties saying, “the time has come to stop the senseless violence, resume civilian governance, and let the people of Sudan achieve their demands for freedom, peace, and justice.”
