UAE AI op targeting UN critics over Sudan

According to a report released by Anthropic, a major UAE-linked AI operation took place, targeting the Muslim Brotherhood and United Nations experts over their criticism of UAE’s role in Sudan.

Anthropic’s report was about the misuse of its AI models; in the report, Anthropic says that it uncovered a propaganda and disinformation campaign linked “with high confidence” to UAE officials.

Having set the Muslim Brotherhood as their primary target – the operation used Anthropic’s Claude chatbot to generate reports, materials, testimonies, and social media content about the war in Sudan.

The operation was centered around an AI persona known as “Deadshot” who was taught to commence “a coordinated transatlantic and regional operation to dismantle the Muslim Brotherhood globally”.

As for the UN, the operation involved impersonating two individuals of a real-life Sudanese human rights organization and drafting reports and testimonies in a way so that “materials serving a party to the Sudan conflict would reach the UN as from independent local witnesses, rather than state messaging”.

The operation involved writing official testimonies for the 62nd session of the UN Human Rights Council under “specific restrictions” that neither speech mentioned the UAE.

Regarding all this, the UAE did not respond  who requested a comment as more than 200,000 have been killed in Sudan and million displaced, according to estimates by aid workers.
