Turkish actresses face wide criticism at Cannes film festival for their attire
Several Turkish stars attended the 77th Cannes Film Festival in 2024, although more people were interested in their clothes than in their work. A well-known actress expressed her extreme disdain of four performers from Turkey.
Turkey was represented by Dilan Çiçek Deniz, Hande Erçel, Pınar Deniz, and Özge Özacar among others who received invitations to the Cannes Film Festival. Social media users were outraged by their red carpet presentations.
It wasn’t only social media users that voiced criticism. Renowned actress Esra Dermancıoğlu also voiced her displeasure with the festival appearances of her colleagues. Dermancıoğlu explicitly called out Dilan Çiçek Deniz, Hande Erçel, Pınar Deniz, and Özge Özacar in a candid Instagram post, saying, “I felt ashamed.”
Esra Dermancıoğlu attacked those who attended the film festival on social media. She attacked her coworkers in a direct manner in an Instagram post, saying:
“I began to see pictures from the Cannes Film Festival. There, the actors that play us from Turkey are only partially clothed. Nudity is fascinating; it appears like we’re attempting to make a point. No, what we’re attempting to demonstrate is that camels aren’t often seen in Turkey. I would have rather seen performers who had great performances, individuals who could communicate effectively rather than simply show up in gaudy clothes.
“It would have been better if those who could speak a few words when given a microphone had attended rather than parading about almost nude. I felt a little guilty. It would have been interesting to hear a Turkish actor talk in-depth there. I was curious to listen to them use the language. I should have been in Cannes, really. We could have at least had a decent discussion.
