Trump hits Canada with 50% tariff

 The Tariff President, Donald Trump, continues to impose tariffs on friends and enemies alike, the latest being Canada with a hefty tariff of 50 percent.

The move comes in response to Trump’s perceived ‘unequal treatment’ of U.S. cars, dairy, and alcohol by Canada; tariff targets ranged from everyday goods such as wine and hockey sticks to industrial goods like cement.

“This is the latest in a series of unilateral US trade actions that began with the US imposing a series of tariffs in direct violation of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement,” Canadian PM Carney said in a statement on X.

While Ontario Premier Doug Ford wrote: “If these tariffs proceed, Canada should respond tariff for tariff, dollar for dollar.”

This marks a major escalation of the tensions that have been simmering since Trump’s election in January 2025, Trump’s comments on making Canada the 51st American state also boosted the tensions where Carney cited “threats to Canadian sovereignty”, in statement regarding the tariffs.

Alongside the tariffs, Trump also has chosen not to renew the existing trade agreement between Mexico, Canada, and the U.S. called USMCA, signaling a breakdown of negotiations regarding trade between the two neighboring countries.

Canada, not sitting idle, has imposed its own 25% levy on $21.7 billion worth of US goods being brought into Canada.
