With the end of the year 2023 being less than a week away now, it might be the perfect time to take a look back at some of the things that happened in this very eventful year, and see just what were some of the top Google searches in Saudi Arabia were. Let’s have a quick look at the past.
1. The 2023 Turkey–Syria earthquakes
This tragedy happened on the 6th of February, and it became the deadliest natural disaster in modern history. Near 60000 people died due to it, not to mention all those who got injured and all the destruction it caused. The damages were estimated to be around $163.6 billion US dollars. Considering how close Syria and Turkey are to Saudi Arabia, it’s no surprise to see it on the list of the most Google searched things.
2. Oppenheimer and Barbie
It’s not everyday two big movies such as Oppenheimer and Barbie come out together in the same day, but that’s what happened with these two movies, and as if that wasn’t enough, they both also made the list of the most Google searched things. The name “Barbenheimer” was made to refer to the two movies, which came out at the 21th of July. Both movies received critical acclaim and exceeded box-office expectations. Their joint opening weekend was the fourth-largest at the American box office
3. Saudi Pro League
The Saudi Pro League, also known as the ROSHN Saudi League for sponsorship reasons, stands at the pinnacle of Saudi Arabia’s football league system. In June of 2023, the league has garnered significant global attention. This heightened exposure is primarily due to its ability to attract top-tier players from European leagues, thanks to highly lucrative contracts. Consequently, the league has swiftly transformed into a star-studded spectacle. It came a long way since it’s foundation all the way back in the year 1976.
4. Aleksandar Mitrović
The most googled person was a Serbian professional footballer who plays as a striker for Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal and the Serbia national team. He managed to achieve a lot in the year 2023. On the 19th of August 2023, a momentous transfer took place as Mitrović made a remarkable move from Fulham to the esteemed Saudi club Al Hilal. The striker wasted no time in making his mark on the team. A mere five days after joining, he made his debut and promptly delivered a goal in a marvelous 4-0 victory over Al Raed. The momentum continued as he showcased his incredible skills on the 1st of September, scoring a phenomenal hat-trick in an exhilarating 4-3 away triumph against Al-Ittihad.

While the tragic events started near the end of the year on the 7th of October, it has quickly risen to be the number 1 googled thing in Saudi Arabia. This isn’t surprising as the conflict is still ongoing and with it new developments nearly every day.
2023 was undoubtedly a very eventful year filled with numerous events, but it’s hard to deny just how many tragedies took place during it. One can only pray and hope that whatever 2024 has it store that it’ll be a much kinder year on everyone.
