Thailand-Cambodia live news: Border clashes could lead to ‘war’ – Thai PM

Thailand and Cambodia continued to exchange fire, as their worst cross-border fighting in years that has killed some 15 people – mostly civilians – entered a second day.
The spokesperson of Thailand’s Foreign Ministry says the country is seeking a bilateral solution to the “escalated armed confrontation” with Cambodia.China’s Wang says ‘root cause’ of dispute a consequence of Western colonialism
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi says Being stands ready to play a constructive role in helping de-escalate the situation between Thailand and Cambodia.
“The root cause of this issue lies in the lingering consequence left by Western colonialists in the past, and it now needs to be faced calmly and handled properly,” he said in a meeting with ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn in Beijing, according to a statement issued by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
The clashes that resulted in casualties are “deeply distressing and concerning”, Wang said, adding that China is ready to uphold a just and impartial position to help resolve the crisis.
The two neighbours’ contesting claims stem largely from a 1907 map drawn under French colonial rule that was used to separate Cambodia from Thailand.
Cambodia has been using the map as a reference to claim territory, while Thailand has argued the map is inaccurate.
