Simple tips to make your car’s fuel last longer

With fuel prices soaring globally due to the ongoing conflict between Iran, Israel and the United States, and international warnings about the war’s economic, security, and social repercussions, some experts have begun offering advice on how to conserve fuel.

According to these experts, changing driving habits and other methods can help make fuel last a little longer.

How to make your car’s fuel last longer?

1. Drive slowly

Sean Tucker, managing director of compact and large cars at Kelley Blue Book, advised that driving at a slower speed or using cruise control can help preserve some fuel, according to the Associated Press (AP).

He added, “Stick to 65 miles per hour (105 kilometers per hour) on the highway. Today’s cars are designed to be most efficient at that speed, and the faster you drive, the more fuel efficiency you lose.”

2. Minimize engine operation while stopping

Experts recommend using your car’s automatic start/stop feature, which shuts off the engine when you’re stopped or waiting and restarts it when you press the accelerator.

David Bennett, director of automotive at AAA, said, “If you’re stuck in traffic and see that movement is slow, and you have this feature, don’t turn it off. Let the engine run and stop when necessary.”

3. Checking tyre pressure

Experts also emphasize the importance of maintaining the correct tyre pressure, according to the vehicle’s manual and suggest checking it every time you fill up with fuel. Bennett explained that underinflated tyres increase road rolling resistance, so when the pressure is correct, the car will run more smoothly and accelerate more effectively.

4. Removing excess weight

Experts also recommend removing excess weight from the car, especially since many drivers use roof racks or bike racks, but pushing these items through the air consumes additional fuel.
