Shakira to pay €7,3 million to in Spain fraud case
Shakira, the Colombian superstar, will be paying €7,3 million in fines after reaching a deal with Spanish prosecutors regarding her tax fraud case in Barcelona.
As part of the deal, which puts an end to the trial in Barcelona, prosecutors swapped a potential prison sentence for the singer for fines, the judge said during the trial’s first hearing.
Shakira has another tax fraud case pending with Spanish authorities and has vowed to fight what she called false accusations.
According to the prosecutor’s office, Shakira spent more than half of each of the years in question in Spain and was normally resident in the nation. It also claims that a Barcelona home she purchased in May 2012 acted as a family residence.
Shakira has been married to Gerard Piqué, a former Barcelona and Spain footballer, for 11 years and they have two children. Following the couple’s divorce, the singer relocated to Miami.
Shakira says she paid what the tax office claimed she owed before it filed a lawsuit, and that she was not residing in Spain at the time since her business required her to live a “nomadic life,” according to Reuters.
She turned down a prosecutor’s offer to settle the case and is slated to appear on Monday in the first of 12 hearings until December 14.
The prosecutor’s office is seeking up to eight years in prison as well as reimbursement for the taxes she allegedly owes.
