Rubio discusses Hezbollah disarmament with Jordan’s King Abdullah

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Jordan’s King Abdullah II on Friday, with Lebanon and efforts to disarm Hezbollah featuring prominently in discussions on regional security.

Rubio and King Abdullah discussed a range of bilateral and regional issues, including implementation of the Trilateral Framework in Lebanon, according to State Department Spokesman Tommy Pigott.

The two also discussed efforts to disarm Hezbollah and promote stability in Syria.

“Secretary Rubio thanked King Abdullah for Jordan’s steadfast role in advancing regional security,” Pigott said in a readout of the call.

The discussion comes as Washington continues to press for implementation of the framework reached between Lebanon and Israel earlier this year, which includes restoring Lebanese state authority and addressing Hezbollah’s weapons and military infrastructure.

Jordan has also publicly emphasized support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and stability. During a meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly last month, King Abdullah called for an end to Israeli attacks on Lebanon and backed Lebanese efforts to preserve the country’s security, stability and sovereignty.

The call also underscored Syria’s place in US-Jordan coordination. Jordan shares a lengthy border with Syria and has repeatedly emphasized the importance of stability in its northern neighbor. Rubio and King Abdullah have previously discussed developments in Syria as part of broader consultations on regional security.

Friday’s conversation highlights Jordan’s role in US diplomatic efforts spanning both Lebanon and Syria as Washington seeks greater regional backing for its push to strengthen state institutions and reduce the influence of armed groups operating outside government control.
