Roger Waters under fire over Israel-Hamas comments
English singer-songwriter Roger Waters, known for his outspoken views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, recently shared his perspectives on the events of October 7th in a discussion with journalist Glenn Greenwald.
Waters, a prominent BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) activist, asserted that Israel’s account of the attack by Hamas raises questions.
When asked about the justification for Hamas’s actions on October 7th, Waters emphasized the need for a comprehensive understanding of the situation.
Waters began by highlighting the legal and moral obligation of Palestinians to resist the occupation since 1967, stating, “Yes, it’s the Geneva Convention. They’re absolutely legally and morally bound to resist the occupation since 1967.”
In addressing the potential occurrence of war crimes, Waters made it unequivocally clear that he condemns such acts. He acknowledged the possibility of civilian casualties but emphasized the importance of discerning the truth amid conflicting narratives. Waters pointed out that he believes the events were sensationalized, asserting, “If war crimes were committed I condemn them. The thing was thrown all out of proportion by Israelis making up stories about beheading babies.”
Waters’ approach to the tragic events also included a call for a comprehensive understanding, acknowledging the possibility of individual civilian casualties, saying, “We don’t yet know what happened. Maybe there were some individual cases of civilians getting killed.” He emphasized that discernment is essential amid conflicting narratives, stating, “The thing was blown out of proportion by Israeli lies.”
Additionally, Waters voiced skepticism about the Israeli military’s apparent intelligence failure, musing, “Didn’t the Israeli army in those 10 or 11 camps hear the bang when [Hamas] blew up whatever they had to blow up to get across the border? There is something very fishy about that.”
Roger Waters also entertained the possibility of the attack being a “false flag operation,” a statement which has led to a massive backlash on social media.
