Celine Song, the acclaimed director of ‘Past Lives’, is gearing up for her next project, ‘Materialists’, a romantic comedy that has attracted an A-list cast. Pedro Pascal, Chris Evans and Dakota Johnson are in talks to lead the film, which will be produced by A24, Killer Films and 2AM.
‘Materialists’ follows a high-end matchmaker who gets involved with a wealthy man, although the specific roles of the actors have not been revealed yet. The film is set to start production in May and will be distributed globally by A24, which also handled the release of Song’s debut feature, ‘Past Lives’.
‘Past Lives’ was one of the most talked-about films of 2023, earning rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. The film, starring Greta Lee, Teo Woo and John Magaro, tells the story of a Korean-American woman who discovers that she has lived multiple lives in different eras and countries. The film received five Golden Globe nominations and two Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.
Song, who is also a playwright and a novelist, has been praised for her original and inventive storytelling, as well as her diverse and authentic representation of Asian-American characters. She revealed that ‘Materialists’ would be her follow-up to ‘Past Lives’ late last year, saying that she wanted to explore the themes of love, money and identity in a contemporary setting.
Pascal, Evans and Johnson are all in high demand in Hollywood, having starred in some of the biggest films and TV shows of recent years. Pascal is best known for his roles in ‘The Mandalorian’, ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ and ‘Game of Thrones’. Evans is famous for playing Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as appearing in ‘Knives Out’ and ‘Defending Jacob’. Johnson rose to fame with the ‘Fifty Shades’ franchise, and has also starred in ‘The Peanut Butter Falcon’, ‘The High Note’ and ‘The Social Network’.
‘Materialists’ is expected to be one of the most anticipated films of 2024, as it marks the reunion of Song and A24, as well as the collaboration of three of the most popular and charismatic actors in the industry.
