Over 1,400 killed in March coastal violence Syrian committee says as it releases findings

The investigation committee into the Syrian coast events in March released its finding on Tuesday saying that government forces were subjected to violations by remnants of ousted President Bashar al-Assad loyalists.

The committee, which released the findings in a news conference after presenting the details to President Ahmed al-Sharaa a few days ago, said that it verified 1,426 deaths, mostly civilians, in the violence.

“On March 6th, the remnants carried out a series of widespread hostile operations, targeting army and general security headquarters, checkpoints and patrols with heavy, medium, and light weapons,” committee spokesman Yasser al-Farhan said.

“The remnants cut off main roads and killed 238 security and army members in the governorates of Latakia, Tartous and Hama,” al-Farhan said.

The committee clarified that it defined those commonly referred to as “remnants” as the remaining organized armed groups affiliated with the former al-Assad regime that operate outside the law.

The committee it also also verified “serious violations against civilians on March 7, 8 and 9.”

It added that it “identified 298 individuals by name, who were involved,” in violence.
