Nurse sentenced for healthcare fraud in France
In a shocking turn of events, a French court recently handed down a verdict on Wednesday, sentencing a nurse to two years of house arrest for stealing over $1.6 million from the national health insurance system by submitting false claims.
The court in Marseille found the 67-year-old nurse guilty of planning out a large-scale scam, exploiting vulnerable people, such as migrants. Over a long period, from 2017 to 2020 to be more exact, she fraudulently billed for 81449 non-existent medical services using the identities of eligible other people, such as acquaintances and migrants on a charity roster.
These deceptive practices allowed her to collect around $1622,603 from more than 30 regional health insurance funds across the country. As a result of the conviction, the court took over eight properties she had purchased with these gains, along with funds in her and her husband’s bank accounts.
The nurse received a sentence of two years of house arrest, with a potential additional three years depending on her conduct. Additionally, she was fined $31900 and ordered to repay the damages caused by her actions all those years ago.
And finally, she was permanently barred from ever being allowed to practice her profession as a nurse ever again. Actions do have their consequences, and this was just one of them for the one nurse.
