MBS hails Trump’s Syria sanctions relief as ‘new page toward prosperity’

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Wednesday praised US President Donald Trump’s announcement to lift sanctions on Syria, saying the move “opens a new page toward growth and prosperity.”
Speaking in Riyadh on Tuesday, Trump said he would lift all sanctions on Syria at the behest of the Saudi Crown Prince, in what marks a major policy shift.
Addressing the GCC-US summit in Riyadh, MBS emphasized the importance of respecting Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and supporting the Syrian government’s efforts to achieve security and stability. He said lifting sanctions would help ease the suffering of the Syrian people.
MBS reiterated Saudi Arabia’s commitment – alongside the US and GCC partners – to reduce regional tensions. He called for an end to the Gaza war and a lasting solution to the Palestinian issue in line with the Arab Peace Initiative.
He said Saudi Arabia supports any initiative that would “end crises and stop conflict through peaceful means.”
MBS also voiced support for the Lebanese government’s efforts to reform state institutions, limit weapons to government control, and protect national sovereignty.
On Yemen, the Crown Prince backed dialogue among Yemeni parties to achieve a comprehensive political settlement. He also reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s commitment to ending the crisis in Sudan.
Turning to the Russia-Ukraine war, MBS welcomed Trump’s engagement in peace efforts and said Saudi Arabia stands ready to help advance a political resolution.
He further welcomed the ceasefire between Pakistan and India, expressing hope it would help reduce tensions and restore calm between the two neighbors.
MBS described the US as a key trade and investment partner for GCC countries, noting that bilateral trade reached nearly $120 billion in 2024.
