‘Massacre’ in Gaza as 70 killed in Israeli strikes

  • At least 70 Palestinians have been killed in an air attack on the Maghazi refugee camp, which a Palestinian Health Ministry spokesperson describes as a “massacre”.
  • Israeli army admits it is fighting a “complex and complicated war” with many soldiers killed. It says at least five dead captives’ bodies retrieved from a tunnel in northern Gaza.
  • The staggering human toll of Israel’s war on Gaza

Israel’s war on Gaza has killed more than 20,000 Palestinians, destroyed homes and livelihoods, and displaced millions of people.

With Israel pledging to continue its assault, the aerial and ground offensive is already one of the most devastating military offensives in recent history.

The statistics tell only part of the story.

Iran refutes US claim it targeted tanker near India

Iran has dismissed a US claim that it was behind an attack on a chemical ship near India, terming the accusation “baseless”.

On Saturday, the Pentagon asserted that a drone launched from Iran struck a chemical tanker in the Indian Ocean.

Tehran has earlier denied claims by the US that it was “deeply involved” in attacks by Houthi rebels on commercial ships in the Red Sea.

On Saturday, Iran’s deputy foreign minister said Houthis were acting on their own.

Israel has yet to achieve an ‘undisputed victory’

Tamer Qarmout, a Doha Institute for Graduate Studies professor, says Israel has not achieved the “undisputed victory” it wanted from this war.

“Hamas still stands, the resistance still stands in the Gaza Strip, and this myth of Israel having control over any neighbourhood of the Gaza Strip is not true. We have seen in some incidents the moment the Israeli forces withdrew from some neighbourhoods inside Gaza and the north, you will see Hamas forces re-emerge immediately,” Qarmout told Al Jazeera.

“So unless they want to reoccupy the entire Strip and stay there for years, I don’t think this target or goal is achievable”.

As Israeli forces move their military operation towards central Gaza, Qarmout says they want the same level of destruction that occurred in the north of the Gaza Strip to make the entire enclave “unlivable” and make the forcible transfer of Palestinians to Egypt a “more feasible” idea.

Many people under the rubble after Israel’s air attacks on central Gaza

Khalil al-Degran, a spokesman from Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, has spoken to Al Jazeera about the situation at the health facility following Israeli air attacks on central Gaza, which also targeted the Maghazi and Bureij refugee camps overnight.

    Here are his translated comments:

    • A large number of people, both killed and injured, are still under the rubble.
    • The massacres come within the framework of a policy of genocide against our people.
    • Several wounded people lost their lives because there were no supplies to treat them with.
    • We appeal to the world to stop the aggression and send medical and food supplies.

Australia’s Usman Khawaja had “Freedom is a human right” and “All lives are equal” written on his boots in the colours of the Palestinian flag in a training session ahead of the first match against Pakistan earlier this month. He was not allowed to wear those during the match.
