- UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said more than one million people in central and southern Gaza did not receive any food rations in August, adding the “humanitarian situation in Gaza remains beyond catastrophic”.
- Gaza’s Health Ministry says the Israeli military is refusing to coordinate the entry of medical teams affiliated with the emergency polio vaccination campaign into areas in the enclave’s south.
Hezbollah says it hit Israeli military targets in Metula and Shebaa Farms
The Lebanese group Hezbollah has announced in a statement posted on their Telegram channel that it targeted and hit buildings in northern Israel’s Metula, as well as an Israeli military barracks in the Shebaa Farms, amid ongoing tit-for-tat attacks along the Israeli-Lebanese border.
Hezbollah says it struck “buildings used by enemy soldiers in the settlement of Metula with appropriate weapons, and hit them directly.” Earlier, Israel’s public broadcaster Kan reported that buildings in Metula had been damaged by three antitank missiles. Hezbollah also said it hit Ruwaysat al-Qarn in the Shebaa Farms.
“We bombed the Zabadin barracks with rockets and achieved a direct hit,” Hezbollah added in a separate statement.
Shebaa Farms, a territory claimed by Lebanon, was captured by Israel during the 1967 Six-Day War.
Four more Palestinians killed in central Gaza’s Nuseirat
At least four people have been killed and a number of others wounded in Israeli shelling of a tent sheltering displaced people west of the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, according to our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic.
We have reported earlier that the Israeli air attack on a residential home in Nuseirat killed at least two people.
Israel trying to ‘Gaza-ify the West Bank’
After completing a 10-day raid in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin, Israel’s military claimed to have killed 14 fighters, including the regional leader of Hamas.
However, Israel’s real objective in Jenin was not simply to target Hamas fighters, but to “wreak havoc on the Palestinians”, making the city even more “difficult to live in”, said Hassan Barari, international relations professor at Qatar University.
“The right-wing members [of Israel’s government] … think they can apply the same model [as Gaza] in the West Bank,” Barari told Al Jazeera. “They are trying to Gaza-ify the West Bank.”

Fires break out in southern Lebanon as Israel drops phosphorus shells
The Israeli army has fired artillery shells containing white phosphorus in southern Lebanon, state news agency NNA has reported.
The incendiary weapon caused fires to break out in the area between Tell en-Nhas and el-Hamames, according to NNA.
Human Rights Watch has verified the use of white phosphorus munitions by Israeli forces in at least 17 municipalities across southern Lebanon since October 2023.
The use of airburst white phosphorus is prohibited under international law.
Side deal between US, Hamas to return US captives ‘not possible’: Report
A White House official has told CNN that the US will not propose a unilateral deal to Hamas to release US citizens held captive in Gaza, despite earlier reports it was considering the option.
“Because of Hamas’s demands, there has not been a formal offer for a side deal made because no such deal is possible,” CNN quoted the unnamed US official as saying.
Yesterday, the White House and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu put out conflicting messages about the prospect of Israel and Hamas reaching a ceasefire. US National Security spokesman John Kirby said that only “implementing details” remained to be hashed out, while Netanyahu said “there’s not a deal in the making”.
At least 12 people killed in Israeli air attacks on Gaza since dawn
This is according to medical sources cited by our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic, saying that the air raids targeted residential homes across the enclave.
The team on the ground said that an Israeli raid on a home in the Bureij refugee camp left a number of people injured.
We have reported earlier that at least six Palestinians were confirmed killed in an Israeli strike on a residential home in Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighbourhood and two more in central Gaza’s Nuseirat refugee camp.
Jenin residents make bittersweet return to devastated homes
Jenin residents are returning to their homes after 10 days of Israeli siege to assess the damage to their properties, in the hope of moving back and resuming their lives.
Aziz Taleb, a 48-year-old father of seven, found out his family home of 20 years had been raided. “Thank God [the children] left the day before. They went to stay with our neighbours,” he told AFP as he surveyed the damage.
Imra Itisadeh, a 60-year-old Jenin resident, found one of the walls of her home partly collapsed and rubble on her car.
“At first, we didn’t want to leave. Later, [the Israeli army] pressured us, and we had to leave our homes. I left with my husband” on foot, she said, adding that she suffers from high blood pressure and heart trouble.
Two of Itisadeh’s children remained in the house with their families and soon ran low on nappies, milk and water. “It’s very difficult, and we are suffering greatly in the camp,” Itisadeh told AFP.
