Israeli snipers fire at north Gaza hospital staff, director says

  • The director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in north Gaza says the Israeli army fired at staff in the intensive care unit, targeted hospital’s power generators
  • Palestinian NGO Network head Amjad Shawa says the death toll from Israeli attacks on Gaza is likely much higher than the more than 45,000 reported today by the territory’s health ministry.

UN rights office sounds alarm over ‘continued pattern of Israeli strikes’ on Gaza schools

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has decried Israeli strikes targeting schools-turned-shelters in Gaza, including a shelter for displaced Palestinians in an area designated as a “safe zone” by the Israeli military.

“At least 69 Palestinians were killed in these attacks including children and women. A mother and her two-day-old newborn daughter are reportedly among the fatalities,” OHCHR said in a statement.

“Almost every Palestinian in the strip has been displaced multiple times in search of safety. But there is no safety and nowhere left to go.”

These attacks have repeatedly resulted in a “distressingly high number of fatalities”, it said.

Targeting shelters housing displaced families in the besieged enclave raises concerns about Israel’s “systematic violation of international humanitarian law”, the statement said.

Yemen’s Houthis launch missile at ‘military target’ in Israel, spokesman says

The Houthis have launched a military operation on a “military target” in the area of Tel Aviv using a hypersonic ballistic missile, the group’s military spokesman, Yahya Saree, says in a televised address.

He said the operation had achieved its objectives.

In an earlier update, the Israeli military said a missile launched from Yemen had been intercepted before crossing into Israeli territory.

The Houthis have been targeting shipping lanes in and around the Red Sea and firing missiles and rockets at Israel in an effort that they said is aimed at ending the war on Gaza.

Israeli demonstrators show solidarity with protesters accused of firing flares at PM’s home: Report

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz reports that hundreds of demonstrators have gathered near the Kishon Detention Center near Haifa in northern Israel in solidarity with the antigovernment protesters accused of firing maritime flares at Netanyahu’s home in Caesarea.

On November 7, three suspects were arrested when two flares landed near Netanyahu’s residence.

In a statement at the time, Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar said it was “a very serious incident that is far from a legitimate protest”.

Haaretz said today’s demonstrators are holding signs that say: “Caesarea detainees – we are with you” and “Political police”.

Hamas says US is ‘main supporter of genocide in Gaza’

Hamas has slammed the US, saying it is responsible for Israeli “massacres” taking place against Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip.

The US is a “main supporter” of Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza, the group said in a statement after dozens of Palestinians were killed in multiple attacks on schools serving as shelters for the displaced in recent days.

“We call on people around the world to organise and pressure the [Israeli] criminals and their supporters to end the bloodshed happening in front of everyone’s eyes,” the statement read.

Trump says he has ‘recap call’ with Netanyahu

US President-elect Donald Trump says he has had a “very good talk” with Israel’s prime minister about the status of the war on Gaza.

“We discussed what is going to happen, and I’ll be very available on January 20, and we’ll see,” Trump said, referring to the day he will be inaugurated.

The two enjoyed a close relationship during Trump’s first term as president, but relations between the two seemed to sour after Netanyahu congratulated Biden on winning the 2020 US presidential election, the results of which Trump continues to dispute.

Relations appear to have warmed again after Trump was re-elected, with Netanyahu congratulating the president-elect “on history’s greatest comeback!”

Trump is also trying to pack his administration with staunchly pro-Israel officials who will need to be confirmed to their posts by the US Congress.

Doctors at Kamal Adwan Hospital under direct attack: Director

A video posted on social media and verified by Al Jazeera’s fact-checking unit shows Dr Hossam Abu Safia, the director of the hospital in North Gaza, speaking about the ongoing Israeli army siege.

He said Israeli snipers, positioned around the hospital, have fired directly at staff in the intensive care unit of the hospital.

Abu Safia added that the army targeted the hospital’s power generators a short while ago, causing a power outage.

He appealed for international protection for his staff and demanded that they be spared from direct and indirect attacks by the Israeli army.

Kamal Adwan Hospital has been under a state of siege by the Israeli army for weeks as it carries out what experts have told Al Jazeera is an ethnic cleansing operation in the northern Strip.
