Israel-Lebanon ceasefire deal: Israeli media share details of agreement

The Israeli Security Cabinet voted to approve a Lebanon ceasefire agreement on Tuesday which is expected to come into effect the following day.

Shortly after the announcement, Israeli media shared what is reported to be details of the agreement.

Security forces along borders

Lebanon will deploy official security forces and army troops along all borders, crossing points, and the designated line of the southern region as outlined in the deployment plan.

Unauthorized weapons and dismantling infrastructure

While all unauthorized weapons production facilities, infrastructure and military sites will be dismantled, according to the text of the ceasefire agreement; the sale of weapons, supplies, productions or materials related to weapons in Lebanon will be supervised by the Lebanese government.

Israeli withdrawal

Israeli media revealed that the agreement also states that Israel will gradually withdraw from south of the Blue Line within 60 days, while ensuring that Israel and Lebanon recognize the importance of Resolution 1701.

It added that the obligations of the ceasefire agreement do not negate the right of Israel or Lebanon to exercise their right to self-defense.

Although, the ceasefire agreement covers that neither parties will carry out any offensive action against each other, in a speech after the ceasefire was approved, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would “respond forcefully to any violation” by Hezbollah.

The agreement states that, in return, Israel will not carry out any offensive military action against targets in Lebanon, whether on land, in the air, or at sea.

Lebanese forces

Lebanese security forces and the Lebanese army will be the only armed forces allowed to carry weapons or operate forces in southern Lebanon.

Israeli media reported that, according to the ceasefire agreement, a committee will be established with the approval of both Israel and Lebanon to oversee and assist in ensuring the implementation of these obligations.

Both countries will submit reports on any possible violations of these obligations to the committee and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), and the US will strengthen indirect negotiations between Israel and Lebanon to achieve recognized land borders.
