Iran war live: US strikes, Kuwait airport attack as Gulf turmoil spreads

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says that while contact with the United States has not been cut off, no progress has been made in the negotiations.
Kuwait says Iranian drone and missile strikes that hit a terminal at its international airport killed one person and wounded dozens of others after inflicting “significant material damage”.
Qatar’s emir, Trump discuss de-escalation, maritime security
Qatar’s emir held a telephone call with Trump, during which, according to a statement, “they reviewed the latest developments in the Middle East, in light of the political and security developments in the region, and the regional and international efforts aimed at de-escalation and promoting stability.”
CENTCOM denies Iran’s claim US vessel targeted in Sea of Oman
“Iran is lying,” CENTCOM has said in a post on X.
We reported a few minutes ago that Iran said it had targeted a US military vessel hosting a “command and control centre” as it approached Iranian territorial waters in the Sea of Oman.
What did Trump say about Iran’s supreme leader?
Speaking to the New York Post’s Pod Force One podcast, Trump said Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is “involved, absolutely” in negotiations and that “we seem to be getting along quite well.”
“They say he is giving approval because that’s the way it has been for a long, long time,” Trump said. “His father and then him, I guess it’s a succession. We probably will meet at some point, depending on how it all works out.”
Trump caught in a dilemma
Trump insists he wants to get this deal done, and it appears that he is prepared to meet the leader of Iran to do so. He did, incidentally, in his first term, raise the possibility of meeting the then-Ayatollah, who was assassinated at the beginning of this war.
There was a lot of political reaction to that, but not so much political reaction on this occasion.
The president is also saying that negotiations are going well – something he has been repeating in recent days. He is also insisting the ceasefire is still holding, despite the outbreaks of violence that we have seen in the past couple of days, in particular.
For Trump, it is a dilemma. He does not want the ceasefire to collapse, because then he may be forced to take the action he has been threatening and launch another offensive against Iran – something that would be deeply unpopular in the US and could have political ramifications for the president.
