Giving Up on the U.S., Palestinian President Abbas Turns to China
Abbas was in the Chinese capital last week on the first visit by an Arab leader since Xi Jinping’s reelection, amid Chinese interest in expanding its Mideast foothold and Palestinian frustration over the impact of American and European pressure on Israel.
Visiting China last week, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called upon Beijing to apply pressure on Israel to advance a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. At a meeting with the visiting Palestinian leader, Chinese President Xi Jinping said his country would work for a comprehensive and just solution to the conflict.
