Escaped dog causes traffic in underground tunnel to shut down
Workers with an Australian toll road operator came to the rescue of a dog that went for a run down a highway tunnel — and nearly ruined a family wedding.
Transurban, which operates the Legacy Tunnel under the city of Brisbane, shared video showing 13-year-old Maltese mix Hermione running through the tunnel with a slow-speed truck in pursuit displaying a “traffic hazard ahead” message on its electronic sign.
The video shows a Transurban worker catch up with the canine and safely remove her from the tunnel.
“Our crew are always ready for a ruff ruff rescue,” the organization wrote.
Hermione’s owner, Jo Thelander, said she and her husband, Jon, were visiting Toowoomba for their daughter’s wedding when the dog escaped through unknown means.
“We have no idea, we were trying to retrace her steps when we came down on Friday but we just couldn’t work it out,” she told 9News. “We just kept looking for all these little spots that she could have got into the tunnel but we have no idea.”
She said the curious canine’s escape is mysterious, but not necessarily surprising.
“She actually likes a little adventure, she’s well known around our area actually for getting out and taking little strolls if we haven’t got our eyes on her,” Thelander said.
Hermione was safely returned home and the Thelanders were able to attend their daughter’s wedding later that day stress-free.
