Canadian student avoids rent by taking airplane to school
Life is full of strange things, and sometimes it’s hard to remember that what might sound or seem strange to us might be perfectly normal for someone else. But even with that said, the idea of someone taking an airplane to school to avoid rent is likely to shock most people, and yet it is the reality of a Canadian student.
The idea of commuting to your school or work by yourself isn’t strange, but doing so by taking an airplane is surely so. A student by the name of Tim Chen, who is residing in Calgary, Canada, boards an Air Canada flight twice a week to attend the University of British Columbia, for the two days he needs to attend university.
While doing so might sound silly to people at first, it should be kept in mind that Vancouver is known for its very high rents, to the point taking an airplane twice a week is still less expensive than renting a one-room apartment in the far run, not to mention he also won’t have to worry about other costs, such as food.
He also stated in a Reddit comment how the airport is very close to his parent’s house in Calgary, only 10 minutes away, making this whole process all the more convenient.
Chen got a lot of praise for his smart thinking on social media, while the University of British Columbia supposedly acknowledges how high the renting market has become, and is considering making below-market housing for students.
