Artificial intelligence outperforms doctors in cancer diagnosis

In recent years, the discussion surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) has expanded beyond its ability to provide quick and intelligent responses to encompass even more significant applications. 

The latest breakthrough in artificial intelligence reveals its potential in cancer diagnosis with an accuracy rate twice that of traditional biopsy procedures, offering a ray of hope for improved healthcare outcomes.

Findings from a study published in the renowned medical journal “Lancet” have shown that AI can successfully diagnose cancer with greater precision than human doctors conducting biopsies.

This research, reported by “The Telegraph,” indicates that AI technology has the ability to revolutionize cancer diagnosis and treatment methods.

The study, conducted by the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and the Institute of Cancer Research, focused on the use of AI in assessing the aggressiveness of the disease. The researchers aimed to determine if artificial intelligence algorithms could give cancer diagnosis more accurately than conventional approaches.

For their investigation, the team focused on sarcoma, a form of cancer that develops in connective tissues like fat, muscle, and nerves.

In England alone, around 4300 cases of sarcoma are diagnosed annually. By analyzing CT scans of 170 patients with different types of sarcomas, the researchers developed an AI algorithm specifically tailored to classify disease aggressiveness.

To test the algorithm’s effectiveness, they examined data from 89 patients at medical centers in Europe and the United States. Astonishingly, the AI algorithm accurately predicted tumor aggressiveness in an impressive 82% of cases, while traditional biopsy tests achieved an accuracy rate of only 44%.

Furthermore, the artificial intelligence system outperformed radiologists in distinguishing between various sarcoma types, providing valuable assistance to medical professionals.
