Baghdad orders probe into drone attacks on Saudi Arabia launched from Iraqi territory

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi on Monday ordered an investigation into the drone attack on Saudi Arabia launched from Iraqi territory, vowing legal action against anyone found responsible.

In a statement issued by al-Zaidi’s office, Iraq said it was examining the evidence and information provided by Saudi Arabia and would prosecute anyone proven to have been involved in the attacks in accordance with the findings of the investigation.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to preventing Iraqi territory from being used as a route or launch point for attacks against neighboring or friendly countries.

“The government is examining the available evidence and information and will take legal action against anyone proven to have been involved in such acts,” the statement said.

Earlier on Monday, Saudi Arabia’s defense ministry said the Kingdom had intercepted drones launched from Iraqi territory and attributed the attack to Iran-backed militias in Iraq.

The Saudi foreign ministry condemned the “reprehensible” drone attacks, reiterating the Kingdom’s determination to safeguard its security and sovereignty and “deter aggressors.”

The ministry also affirmed Saudi Arabia’s right to respond to the source of the attacks and urged the Iraqi government to take all necessary measures to prevent its territory from being used as a launchpad for attacks against the Kingdom.

The Iraqi government said its ties with Saudi Arabia were “deep-rooted and fraternal,” stressing that it would not allow any attempt to undermine the relationship.
