Saudi Crown Prince and Syrian president discuss ties in phone call

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman received a phone call from Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa on Tuesday.

During the call, the two leaders discussed bilateral relations and ways to strengthen them, SPA said.

“They also discussed issues of common interest and the efforts being made to consolidate security and stability and achieve economic recovery in brotherly Syria,” the agency added.

The call comes a day after King Salman and MBS sent separate cables congratulating al-Sharaa on the first anniversary of Syrians overthrowing Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Syrian forces led by al-Sharaa toppled al-Assad last year, ending more than five decades of al-Assad family rule.

Relations between Saudi Arabia and Syria have flourished since the fall of the Iran-backed al-Assad regime. In February, al-Sharaa chose Saudi Arabia for his first foreign visit as Syria’s new president.

In May, MBS persuaded President Donald Trump to lift US sanctions on Syria and facilitated a meeting between Trump and al-Sharaa in the Kingdom.
